Tea rooms have a long and cherished history. In England, they began appearing in the early eighteenth century as places where people could gather to enjoy tea and light refreshments in a refined setting. That tradition is alive and well at Abigail’s Tea House, a tea room in St. George, Ontario that brings the charm and elegance of a British tea room to southwestern Ontario.
An Authentic Tea Room in Ontario
Unlike a typical restaurant or cafe, a tea room is defined by its atmosphere and its dedication to the tea experience. At Abigail’s, the setting is as important as the menu. Our tea room is decorated in Victorian style with birdcage chandeliers, tufted seating, antique-inspired wallpaper, and fine bone china on every table. The space seats just six tables, creating an intimate and personal atmosphere that larger venues cannot replicate.
Every detail of the experience has been carefully considered, from the quality of the loose leaf teas to the freshness of the scones baked each morning to the imported Devonshire clotted cream that accompanies them. Guests frequently tell us that visiting Abigail’s feels like being transported to a tea room in the English countryside.
What We Serve
Our tea room menu centres on the traditional high tea service. The full High Tea begins with our aged cheddar pimento spread and crackers, followed by a curried chicken Waldorf salad, then the classic three-tiered stand with finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and preserves, and an assortment of desserts. We also offer the Garden Tea for a lighter visit and the Celebration Tea for special occasions. Younger visitors are welcome to enjoy the Ladybug Tea, sized perfectly for children.
We serve over 40 loose leaf teas, and each guest selects their own pot from our menu. All of our teas are also available for purchase to enjoy at home, along with preserves, Chantilly cream, and other specialty items.
